Description: This elegant pendant was made by Tom Sterling, combining shibuichi and .999 fine silver. Shibuichi means "one-fourth" in Japanese and indicates the standard formulation of one part silver to four parts copper. Until the Meiji reforms (late 19th century), when swordsmiths began to make purely decorative objects instead of swords, shibuichi was used to ornament various fittings for katana. The pendant is a miniature tsuba (Japanese sword guard) and measures just under 1-1/2 inches in diameter. The dragonfly and cherry blossom motif is meticulously carved and shows Tom Sterling's work at its best. The backing is .999 fine silver. The pendant is accompanied by an 18 inch Argentium silver chain and can be displayed in the American walnut display stand. Exceptional work throughout!
