Description: 2011 marks the 35th anniversary of Bob's knifemaking. Throughout the year, he will be marking his 35 favorite knives of the year with the "Lay 35" mark to celebrate the anniversary. This is one such knife. Bob Lay's bowie knives are very hard to come by. He only makes 2-3 per year. When he puts his skill toward creating a bowie, the results are exceptional, showing off designs that are well thought out and showing an amazing degree of craftsmanship. This Hunter's Bowie Set features a full sized bowie with an 8-1/4 inch blade and a skinning knife with a 2-1/2 inch blade.
The jet black buffalo horn spacer nicely highlights the traditional elk antler handle. The brass (rare for Bob!) guard and butt cap create a perfect balance in the hand. Alternating brass and black fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. By mirror polishing the flats of the blade and satin finishing the grinds, Bob creates a knife with grind lines that are very dramatic. The blade has been tempered to 58 Rc for sturdy, optimal edge retention.
The Bowie is accompanied by a skeletonized hunter, also formed from ATS-34 stainless steel. It fits nicely into a front pocket on the sheath. Ships with certificate from the maker, a leather sheath, and a cordura storage pouch.
