Description: Canadian bladesmith Mark Banfield created this exceptional, hand forged, one-of-a-kind Persian fighter!
The upswept blade was forged from 1095 carbon steel and was heat treated using a traditional Japanese clay zone heat treatment. Prior to quenching, the center of the blade was coated in clay, acting as a heat sink. The result is a soft, supportive central line with an ultra-hard cutting edge on both fully sharpened sides. The gently undulating heat treatment line is called a hamon. Both the skill in grinding and the turned back hamon show tremendous skill. A 400 grit hand satin finish lends tremendous refinement.
The fittings are formed from wrought iron recovered from an 1800s era ship anchor. The natural wrought iron texture is revealed by acid etching, then heat bluing and light sanding so that the high points are silver and the low points are dark.
The carved handle is exceptional! Curly maple and desert ironwood are combined into a seamless joint. Flame carving is both visually exciting and provides a sure, comfortable grip. The pommel is inset with a bronze fitting and red carnelian gemstone.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath that also sports the flame theme. Exceptional work throughout!
