Description: Van Barnett's knives have a flowing sense of movement and grace of proportion rarely found in work by other bladesmiths. This is one of Van's very early pieces, completed in 1990. It is marked with the Barnett Blades / W.VA mark that Van used while he trained with his father, also a knifemaker. It is clear to see that even at the beginning of his career, Van had very high standards of design and construction. The knife has been in a private collection and is in new condition. It does not appear to have ever been used to cut.
The drop point, recurved blade is formed from 440C stainless steel, hardened to 58 Hrc. A mirror polish enhances the sleek grind lines and adds to the rococo feel of the piece - the ornate design and lavish details would make this knife at home at Louis XIV's court at Versailles.
The handle scales are formed from cinnamon-toned redwood burl, secured to the full tang with four brass pins. Boldly fileworked front and rear bolsters have each been inlaid with a round-cut cubic zirconium (a total of four gems). The filework is well-executed and bold, decorating not only the outside edges of the bolsters but the edges of the cubic zirconium settings. Black fiber spacers assist the knife in adjusting to temperature and humidity changes. A rare and remarkable find!
