Description: South African knifemaker, Andre Van Heerden, creates an amazing folder -- and at a price that could never be found from an American handmade knife.
The Panzer 36 stainless blade is meticulously hand satin finished in the grinds and mirror polished on the flats. Panzer 36 is a martensitic stainless steel with high hardness, high wear resistance and good corrosion resistance. It is cross rolled in production to cancel out residual stresses from the manufacturing process. It has only recently begun being used by knifemakers and has gained significant acclaim by South African makers, where it has quickly found popularity. Mastersmith Kevin Harvey has been involved in the initial testing of Panzer 36 and describes it as having ' excellent edge holding and toughness.' The blade has been hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. By hand satin finishing the grinds and mirror polishing the flats, Andre accentuates the unique, crisp grind lines.
The unique opening mechanism, invented by another South African maker, Andre Thorburn, is called a roll opening. This modification on a flipper opening is tremendously easy to use and won't catch when stored in the pocket. The blade is easily opened by running either the thumb or first finger along the textured 'roll' at the back of the blade. When combined with the IKBS ball bearing system, the action is exceptional! The Ikoma Koth Bearing System (IKBS) pivot system was originally designed to fit balisong knives and uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with virtually no blade play.
The handle scales are formed from marbled carbon fiber. The unique carbon fiber pattern is immediately captivating. The interwoven layers of fiber have a slight chatoyant effect when turned in the light. The gold tones of the anodized titanium liners complement the carbon fiber perfectly. The resulting handle will have excellent durability as a using knife, but will easily feel at home in a collection. A pocket clip mounted for tip up carry keeps the knife close at hand. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
