Description: Based in Missouri, Mastersmith Bill Buxton enjoys experimenting with new damascus patterns and strives to make patterns that are truly innovative, genuinely one-of-a-kind. Because of this, he enjoys working on bigger bowies, tomahawks and daggers, which allow him to show off his unique patterns.
This sole authorship quillion dagger by Bill is classic Americana, distilled into a blade. He completed the knife in 2009, the year before he received his Mastersmith ranking.
The hand forged, star and W pattern damascus blade and damascus fittings were forged by Bill. By choosing to place a flare of damascus stars along the center of the blade, Bill has evoked the glorious feeling of liberation and freedom that Americans hold dear. The W's pattern damascus, too, is reminiscent of Old Glory's stripes whipping in the wind.
The pre-ban elephant ivory handle is masterfully hand fluted -- the delicate form enhanced with inlaid and twisted silver wire. It has wide quillions to guard the hand, formed from the same W's pattern damascus that edges the blade and forms the spacer and butt cap. The swirling patterns revealed by the cross-cut damascus co-ordinate with the twisted silver perfectly.
The sheath is formed from African blackwood, and overlaid with 464 layer random pattern damascus. The damascus is held to the wood with eleven nickel silver pins. The throat of the sheath is formed from damascus matching the overlay, while a frog featuring two damascus stars - to match the blade's center - completes the piece. Excellent work throughout!
