Description: The Buck family has managed Buck Knives from 1902 to the present day, manufacturing popular sport and field knives. Buck Knives both invented the "folding hunting knife" and popularized it extensively - today, "buck knife" is synonymous with folding lockback knives, even including those not made by the Buck family business.
This is a fine example of the style of collectable custom knife that made Buck Knives famous. The custom shop was only open for about 10 years, from the early 80’s to the early 90’s. The Buck Custom Shop provided the customer with a wide and varied range of basic models to choose from and the customer could then pick exactly how they wanted their knife to be built. Everything from the blade steel type, handle, guard material, and even display box was up to the customer.
The company historian at Buck Knives has records showing that 70 of the 904 model were customized. Since the shop closed, Buck Knives made more of this model but mostly as employee service awards.
The blade is formed from mirror polished 440C stainless steel, with a dramatic, upswept clip point that runs along almost two thirds of the spine. An equally dramatic recurve balances the upswept clip perfectly, a deep swedge, bold finger choil and hollow grind completing this magnificent blade. The grind is flawless, further enhanced by the "Buck Custom, USA" logo. The serial number 0016 can be seen beneath the logo, indicating that this is the sixteenth time this base model had been used - not the sixteenth time this exact knife has been made.
The handle is formed from a single piece of desert ironwood - observe how the grain of the wood continues across the brass subhilt. Deep, rich tones of the fine-grained wood are set off perfectly by the brass of the guard, subhilt and butt cap. To continue the comfortable grip the subhilt provides, the ironwood has been sculpted with finger grooves. Black fiber spacers assist the natural materials to adjust to temperature and humidity changes.
This knife comes complete with a classic western fringed and tooled leather sheath. A beautiful collector's piece reminiscent of the glory days of the Wild West!
This knife has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it is in new condition and has never been used to cut. This is a very rare find and an exceptional example of the work created by the Buck Knives Custom Shop during their heyday.
