Description: The Buck family has managed Buck Knives from 1902 to the present day, manufacturing popular sport and field knives. Buck Knives both invented the "folding hunting knife" and popularized it extensively - today, "buck knife" is synonymous with folding lockback knives, even including those not made by the Buck family business.
This is a fine example of the style of collectable custom knife that made the Buck Knives Custom Shop famous. The custom shop was only open for about 10 years, from the early 80’s to the early 90’s. The Buck Custom Shop provided the customer with a wide and varied range of basic models to choose from and the customer could then pick exactly how they wanted their knife to be built. Everything from the blade steel type, handle, guard material, and even display box was up to the customer. The company historian at Buck Knives has records showing that 250 of the 905 model have been customized.
The blade is formed from mirror polished 440C stainless steel, with a dramatic, upswept clip point that runs approximately half of the spine length. The grind is flawless, further enhanced by the Buck "Mountain Man" insignia and the "Buck Custom, USA" logo. The serial number 0184 is beneath the logo. This indicates that this is the 184th time this base model has been used - not the 184th time this exact knife has been made.
The handle is formed from a single piece of high-quality sambar stag antler with the crown intact. The antler has been pared down in places for both a comfortable grip and a superior fit and finish. The bolster is formed from brass, and an ironwood spacer complements the stag well while black fiber spacers assist the natural materials to adjust to temperature and humidity changes.
This knife has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it is in new condition and has never been used to cut. This is a very rare find and an exceptional example of the work created by the Buck Knives Custom Shop during their heyday.
