Description: Pär-Olof Eklund is one of the masters of the Sami styled knife and regularly receives awards in the Swedish Championships. Seeing his work, with its considered design and consistently masterful fit and finish, it is no surprise.
This knife is truly a one-of-a-kind piece. The pictorial mosaic damascus blade was forged by renowned Swedish bladesmith Mattias Styrefors, who incorporated pictorial mosaic damascus featuring geometric patterns, stripes and lifelike polar bears with a central core of 20C into a beautiful san mai blade.
The handle is very traditional, with a slim and perfectly proportioned ovoid shape which swells to fit the palm. Three discrete sections of reindeer antler, polished to a glossy finish, are separated by two narrow pieces of masur birch in gold and warm brown tones. The central section of antler features a dramatic circular cutout, inlaid with a narrow rim of sallow root and providing a window to the charming polar bear image beneath. Exquisite Swedish engraving surrounds the inlay, drawing the viewer's attention to the masterful Styrefors damascus. The traditional Scandinavian patterns on the sheath and handle are deeper than scrimshaw - a type of hand engraving, darkened with alder bark powder. The engraving is very detailed and stunningly well-placed, showing tremendous skill of both design and implementation.
The sheath, in the traditional Swedish half horn style, features engraving that both matches and contrasts with the engraving on the knife handle. Reflecting the themes of the handle, a circular window, rimmed with a sallow root inlay, reveals another of Styrefors's mosaic damascus polar bears. The half horn sheath is completed with a wide band of leather, a braided leather cord and a decorative reindeer antler bead. Exceptional fit and finish throughout! Accompanied by reindeer leather storage pouch.
