Description: This drop point hunter shows how Aaron Wilburn's work is developing an increasing refinement of design while he continues to create hard-working, field-use knives.
The blade was forged to shape from 52100 carbon steel. Many makers and collectors feel that this is the best steel available anywhere for use as a knife blade. The blade was then differentially heat treated, bringing the edge to critical temperature then oil quenching three times. Many thermal cycles and normalizing steps assure consistent grain structure. The blade was then triple tempered at 400 degrees for exceptional durability. A cryogenic treatment between tempers enhances the edge holding ability. A hand rubbed satin finish shows off the resulting heat treatment line and complements the handle perfectly.
The antler handle is slightly smoothed, the raw deer nubs providing a secure grip. The curve of the crown fills the hand and provides a perfect counterpoint to the well-shaped nickel silver bolster - one's hand rests securely between the two and it makes this knife intensely satisfying to hold. A highly polished section of oosic is set between two pieces of ancient walrus cheek plate, and all pieces are separated by black fiber spacers. The spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. A serious field knife for the avid hunter or collector. The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched pouch style sheath which incorporates the cow's original brand.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
