Description: Michael Quesenberry has this to say about the art of knifemaking - "A custom knife should do three things well: be visually appealing, well-balanced in the hand, and hold a razor-sharp edge." BladeGallery was fortunate enough to meet Michael at the 2010 Boise knife show, very soon after he had been honored as a journeyman smith. This bowie clearly manifests these three characteristics prized by Michael, and BladeGallery is excited to show his work. Michael is an up and coming maker that we are watching with great expectations.
Michael began by forging a tight ladder pattern for the blade. The gentle repetitions show off a much desired chatoyancy -- a light effect similar to that of a tiger's eye gem stone. The long clip is brought just shy of a fully sharpened edge, whereas the cutting edge is razor sharp. Michael's mark and his JS stamp are set on opposing sides of the ricasso.
The handle is sculpted from desert ironwood. Michael chose a piece with high-contrast grain definition and shaped the handle with attention to the pattern of the grain for maximum impact. The shape fills the hand comfortably, with a guard to prevent your hand slipping onto the blade during use. A nickel silver and black fiber spacer separates the handle from the satin finished stainless steel guard. The fiber spacer assists the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. Excellent fit and finish throughout!
