Description: Coming back from the Blade Show with mastersmith test knives is one of my great highlights of the year. In 2010, two new mastersmiths joined the ranks. Five knives were made by each applicant -- the height of their work. These knives were judged by ABS mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. Michael Rader's Damascus Gent's Bowie is one of the knives that he chose to represent his work in this prestigious test. This knife has been kept in a private collection since it was made and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Michael could have made it yesterday.
The spear point blade was forged to shape using Michael's own damascus. The fine pattern combines 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels into a complex and immediately captivating damascus. The blade moves into an oval guard formed from satin finished stainless steel.
The complex wood handle continues to be a hallmark of Rader's work. Warm toned exhibition grade koa wood is combined with accents formed from maple and African blackwood. Very few knifemakers share Michael's exceptional woodworking skills. The woods are meticulously combined in complex cuves -- with the seams beyond perception. Exceptional work throughout.
The knife is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Michael noting it to be among his Mastersmith Test Knives.
