Description: Canadian bladesmith Mark Banfield has a unique sense of design that is matched only by his skill. This modified harpoon tip one-of-a-kind fighter is one of my favorite knives that he has made to date.
Mark began by hand forging the unique blade from 1075 carbon steel. The spine is brought to a false edge and the cutting edge is razor sharp. The blade was heat treated using a traditional Japanese technique whereby the spine is coated in clay, resulting in a soft, supportive spine with an ultra-hard edge. The resulting gently undulating heat treatment line is called a gunome hamon. The blade was acid etched to bring out the hamon and brought to a 400 grit hand satin finish.
The guard and pommel were both forged from wrought iron recovered from an 1800s era anchor. They have been heat blued then polished, so that the high points are silver and the low points are black. A snowflake obsidian cabochon is set into a silver fitting at the pommel. The macassar ebony handle was meticulously carved into a spiral. It was then polished to a silky finish. The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath. The tooling repeats the spiral imagery of the handle. Exceptional work throughout!
