Description: Neil McKee has created this outstanding handmade reproduction of an early American trap spring knife. These knives were common as America's frontier was being settled and provided an excellent example of the conservation of materials. Because tool steel was very hard to come by, when a trap broke, the springs were saved and often made into knives. The spring's loop end became an integral part of the design.
Neil's Trap Spring Knife is striking. He hand forged the 1095 carbon steel trap spring to shape, leaving rustic hammer marks along the ricasso and flats. By differentially heat treating the blade, Neil assured that the spine, we soft and resilient, whereas the edge is keen and long lasting. Elk antler scales are accented with hammer finished brass pins. A full tang assures a strong knife that just won't quit! Excellent work throughout.
