Description: The Hunter shows the clear influence of Mastersmith Ed Fowler's Pronghorns. Eldon worked with Ed for literally hundreds of hours, and the craftsmanship shows in his finished knives.
Like the knives of Ed Fowler and Bill Burke, each knife that Eldon creates is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment has been proven to create some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere.
This blade features a grain pattern on the surface that is indicative of the forging only in an extremely tight temperature range. The grain pattern on this Bowie knife is particularly good. This forging method results in a particularly durable and long lasting edge.
The blade was forged from 52100E steel. This is a high carbon, high chrome steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. The blade is forged at low temperature. It is subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Ed Fowler for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, this knife is easy to sharpen, yet holds an exceptional edge.
The handle is a creative twist on the traditional sheep horn normally used by Eldon and Fowler. The large brass guard is the same guard used for the sheep horn hunter. The sheep horn front spacer has been replaced by a section of ironwood. The remainder of the handle is made from stag. A rear pommel made from brass is carved to match the texture of the stag. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
