Description: An incredibly versatile weapon, the naginata was used by both men and women in Japan, though women used it far more. A pole arm weapon, it incorporated a long pole (at least 4 feet) with a curved blade on the end.
Mainly defensive, with a much greater reach than a sword, the naginata was also more effective than a spear as it could be used to stab or slash. This combination allowed the user to attack in almost any direction. Their foes were forced to stand back, or leave themselves open to attack before they could close the distance and attack themselves.
This full dress naginata is the collaborative creation Scott and Barbara Slobodian. The 1050 carbon steel blade has a dramatic gunome hamon line that is immediately captivating. This, combined with his choice of steel assures a keen long lasting edge.
The habaki (the blade collar, which protects the blade from scratches while in the sheath), tsuba (sword guard), fuchi (collar) and kashira (end cap) were each formed from solid silver. The tsuba has been hand engraved by Barbara Slobodian in a stylized storm motif. The maple haft and saya were lacquered. As is traditional, the handle is fully disassembleable using ebony pins. Full dress work at its best!
