Description: This exceptionally creative knife is a collaboration between Mastersmith Hank Knickmeyer and Chantal Gilbert. Hank is one of the first folks that introduced me to highly detailed mosaic Damascus steel and I continue to be amazed by the level of intricacy in his designs. His skill of implementation, control over Damascus and artistic vision is rarely matched. When Canadian jeweler and knifemaker Chantal Gilbert visited Hank and they began working on collaborative knives, the results were exceptional. When two such esteemed artists combined their efforts, it was no surprise that this knife won Best Collaboration at the 2008 Blade Show in Atlanta.
The blade is a complex san mai mosaic Damascus -- a hallmark of Hank's work. The mosaic outside of the blade is a highly detailed version of Hank's Butterflies and Flowers mosaic damascus. A thin layer of pure nickel separates the damascus from a 1084 high carbon steel core. This technique results in a highly complicated blade that will have exceptional edge holding.
The handle combines .925 sterling silver with bronze. Chantal used various metalworking techniques usually associated with jewelers to create unique textures to both bronze and silver. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
