Description: This bronze sculpture is the exceptional work of knifemaker, stone sculptor and bronze artist, Don Carlos Andrade. It encompasses and represents a period of time when Don Carlos Andrade was active in non-nuclear pursuits, focusing primarily on the long-term problematics of waste from municipal nuclear reactors throughout our country and abroad. The Presentation is in a series that included more than a dozen sculptures and 16 or so wood-block prints.
The Presentation is a one-of-a-kind, unique piece cast in the lost wax method, and truly exemplifies that modality of casting metals in that it was created directly in wax, and then invested, burned-out, and the void filled with molten bronze. Don only had one shot to make the sculpture and fortunately, it turned out beautifully
Within this series Don developed a type of glyph language, shown both in the printwork, and some of which are represented on the bronze pieces themselves. A series of about 24 symbols were "invented" to represent aspects of the nuclear issue, such as guardianship, storage, handling, time, degradation, half-life and so on.
The Presentation is the only piece like this Don did where it was much like a guardian, but was actually presenting the material to the viewer. The scepter this figure holds has a sphere at the top, representative of just one style of uranium pellets found in the control-rods within many nuclear reactors in our country and abroad. Also The Presentation exhibits a large shield with a one of two versions of half-life scribed into it as a design (this one pertaining to Don's version of infinity). The Presentation exhibits a patina of ferric chloride and silver nitrate, and is not sealed with wax, so it can be expected to change over time. The sculpture may run more greenish tones if you live near the sea, and more towards reddish and brown tones if you live in rural areas away form the coast. It is easy to maintain - just clean with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
The sculpture measures approximately 20 inches in height and is approx 12 inches across. It stands on a foot print that measures approximately 5 1/2 inches in diameter.
