Description: De Wet attended a 5 day bladesmithing and damascus course with South African Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey back in 2005. It was very quick the bladesmithing 'bug' caught him and he joined the two of them as a full-time apprentice in March 2007. He is an apprentice smith with the ABS. De Wet came 4th in the Non-Guild Knifemaking Competition in 2007. He enjoys forging his own damascus and carbon steel knives and particularly enjoys making culinary knives.
This European style quillion dagger shows off his work at its best. The deeply hollow ground blade is perfectly ground -- with a central ridge perfectly centered. The blade is Bohler N690 stainless steel, which is very similar to 440C. The blade is finished with a meticulous hand satin finish.
The handle is hand fluted red ebony from Malawi. The wood has a dramatic grain structure that is nicely brought out by the fluting. Each of the flutes culminates in twisted brass wire inlay. Spacers are formed from textured and antiqued copper and fileworked bronze. The pierced bronze guard has also been antiqued and textured. The handle is completed with a bronze pommel. The dagger is accompanied by a basswood sheath wrapped with ostrich shin leather. Textured and antiqued brass fittings complete the sheath. Exceptional work throughout!
