Description: I am very pleased to be able to show Peter Mason's work on BladeGallery. Though renowned in South African, Peter's work is not yet well known in the United States, but from seeing his work at the 2007 Blade Show in Atlanta, I have no doubt that he will quickly be well known internationally. Peter's work has a precision rarely found, and reflected in makers such as Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. He often incorporates sculpting that shows the influence of Larry Fuegen and David Broadwell. Overall shapes and proportions are borrowed from his friend Bertie Rietveld. The end result is unique and inspiring!
The twist pattern Damascus blade has a tight twists with stars created by the symmetrical hollow grind. The blade has been nicely carved to highlight the Damascus pattern. Peter has textured the steel in the "cuts" to highlight the carving. The blade enters the handle in elegant bronze quillions. Peter continues to include texturing with his carving to a very pleasing effect. The handle shows the influence of renowned bladesmith Larry Fuegen. A fossil walrus ivory pillar has been carved into an elegant, organic pattern. The handle is finished off with a textured bronze pommel. Exceptional work throughout!
