Description: Canadian Bladesmith Mark Banfield has created an exceptional, hand forged, one-of-a-kind subhilt fighter!
The blade was forged from 1075 carbon steel and was heat treated using a traditional Japanese technique whereby the the spine is coated in clay, resulting in a soft, supportive spine with an ultra-hard edge. The resulting gently undulating heat treatment line is called a hamon. The blade was tempered twice for exceptional edge holding. A 400 grit hand satin finish lends tremendous refinement. The top clip is brought to a very thin false edge that could be easily sharpened.
Both the pommel and guard were carved from brass and have been appealingly textured. A black onyx stone is set into the pommel.
The handle was made from stacked layers African blackwood, stabilized juniper burl and bone, all highly polished. The handle has been carved for a perfect feel in the hand. Exceptional work throughout with an exceptional fit and finish.
