Description: With such a dramatic knife, it is no surprise that it won Knife of the Year at the 2007 Soderham show in Sweden. Michael Almqvist has been a knifemaker for nearly 30 years, having crafted his first knife at 15. The many years of artistry clearly show in this exceptional Nordic hunter.
The Damascus blade was forged by renowned Swedish bladesmith Roger Bergh. A complex twist pattern is nicely complimented by the hollow ground blade. The long swedge has been brought short of a fully sharpened edge. By using 20C and 15N20 carbon steels, Roger has assured a keen, long lasting edge. As is traditional in Nordic countries, the blade is created by a true master of the forge, whereas the handle is created by a knifemaker who has focused exclusively on that. This focus allows an amazing level of skill to be developed.
The handle is formed from masur birch with reindeer antler and fossil mammoth ivory spacers. The antler has been meticulously engraved (not scrimshaw) with a traditional Sami pattern of interwoven ribbons. The detail is incredibly clear and well done. The accompanying sheath combines leather with reindeer antler so as to match the theme of the knife. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
