Description: I am very pleased to be able to show Peter Mason's work on BladeGallery. Though renowned in South African, Peter's work is not yet well known in the United States, but from seeing his work at the 2007 Blade Show in Atlanta, I have no doubt that he will quickly be well known internationally. Peter's work has a precision rarely found, and reflected in makers such as Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. He often incorporates sculpting that shows the influence of Larry Fuegen and David Broadwell. Overall shapes and proportions are borrowed from his friend Bertie Rietveld. The end result is unique and inspiring!
The Damascus blade has a twist pattern with chatoyancy (an effect that makes the pattern appear to change as the knife is turned in the light). The blade has been hollow ground to accentuate the bold, well centered grind line. The blade enters the handle through the precision fit carved bronze guard. Both the quillion guard and pommel have been carved in an artistic shape of a bird's head, evoking the birds shown in Celtic knotwork. The handle is formed from verdite. In short supply, verdite is an uncommon stone. A dark green background is highlighted with yellow, red, and lighter green spots. Exceptional work throughout!
