Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Their name is well known in re-enactment circles throughout the world and movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work. Perhaps most cherished of their work, are the few rawhide box sets -- matching a dramatic knife with a hand painted and aged rawhide box.
The box and sheath were created by Karen Shook. Rawhide has been hand stretched across a wooden frame. The rawhide was then painstakingly hand painted with multiple layers and antiqued for a true heirloom appearance. The images include a Native American cross, symbolizing the four directions. The box is opened using leather hinges. The box is lined with buffalo fur.
Inside the box are the knife, created by Mastersmith Daniel Winkler, a post to hold open the lid for display, and the detailed sheath.
The blade was hand forged by Daniel from 1095 and L6 carbon steels, forming a twist pattern. The flats have been textured and antiqued to resemble the pattern of a Nickelson file. In earlier eras, old files were often re-ground after they had lost the tooth and turned into knives. While these were naturally not Damascus, the texturing evokes this earlier style of knife. The handle is formed from a solid piece of caramel toned fossil walrus ivory. The ferrule is formed from copper with sinew ornamentation. The spine has been fileworked for a secure thumb purchase.
The accompanying sheath is formed rawhide with a single hand sewn edge. Copper pins, along with ancient walrus tooth, glass, bone, tin cones, and horse hair complete the sheath. The top has porcupine quill ornamentation. The wooden post has been decorated with copper, sinew, and tin cones to bring together the elements held in the knife and sheath. Exceptional work throughout!
Accompanied by certificate from the maker.
