Description: Knifemaker Hidetoshi Nakayama has been making knives since 1990. I was tremendously impressed when I first saw his work at the East Coast Custom Knife Show in March 2004 and have enjoyed watching his work progress over the years. He has been a netsuke artist for over 10 years. Netsuke is a unique form of small sculpture which developed as an art form in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. Over time netsuke, which started as a toggle used to stop the kimono cord from slipping, began to feature elaborate carving, lacquer work, and inlays of rare and exotic materials including ivory, wood, precious metals, shell, coral, and semiprecious stones. Clearly the attention necessary for carving fine figures in netsuke has transferred to his knife and jewelry making.
This knotted black Japanese silk bracelet features a Noh mask cast in sterling silver. The traditionally styled mask shows tremendous detail on a grizzly face. Noh performances reflect upon the daily life and times of the Japanese. An extremely stylized art form which dates back to the feudal period, the masks used convey the mood and character of the part played by the performer. The mask is a manifestation of elegant simplicity and rustic tranquility (Yugen). This mask is of a style known as "Ghost Spirits". This mask, known as Hannya, is translated as wisdom that understands the original way of life and recognizes the highest truth.
The bracelet measures approx. 8 1/2 inches. Exquisite work from a maker rarely seen in the United States custom knife community!
