Description: Bill Burke, who was honored as a journeyman smith June 2003, is best known for creating some of the best hunters that can be found anywhere. Recently, he put his attentions to creating a tomahawk -- the first that he has made, and the result is exceptional.
Bill began this hawk with a single piece S-7 tool steel and forged this to shape. This steel, also used for jackhammer bits, holds up well under impact, and was a perfect choice. The eye for the haft was carefully split and spread during forging, resulting in a very strong construction.
The hawk is sharpened both on the cutting face and on the inside and outside curve toward the face. The spike is extremely sharp. Both the cutting edge and the spike have been differentially heat treated, resulting in keen edge holding and strength. From tip to edge, the head measures 8 inches. The cutting edge is approximately 2 1/2 inches. The haft measures 18 inches. This tomahawk is an wonderful addition to any hawk collection and has a perfect weight for chopping.
