Description: Bill Burke was honored as a Journeyman Smith June 2003. He became a Mastersmith in 2008. Bill is well known for his high performance knives. He developed a heat treatment technique in conjuction with Mastersmith Ed Fowler that creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. Each of his knives is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The dramatic Gent's Bowie has been in a private collection since it was made in the summer of 2007 (while Burke was a Journeyman Smoth). It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Burke could have made it yesterday.
This unique Gent's Bowie features the same edge retention as Burke's sheep horn knives that he is so well known for. The blade was forged to shape at low temperature from 52100 carbon steel. A triple quench and triple temper result in combined resilience and edge holding. A swedge results in an aggressive tip. The blade was hand satin finished.
Burke created the handle scales from inner core mammoth ivory. This ancient ivory, which was made from the center core of the tusk is cream toned. The scales are secured with heat colored screws. The full tang, which results in superior strength and durability has been meticulously fileworked in a vine pattern. Both the blade and tang are distal tapered for perfect balance.
Tremendous fit and finish throughout.
With all this, it is no surprise that this knife won Best Hand Forged Knife at the 2007 OKCA Show.
