Description: Journeyman Smith David Banks is a long time friend of Audra Draper. Starting making knives in 1993, he apprenticed under Mastersmith Ed Fowler with Mastersmith Audra Draper (then an apprentice). In fact, he recalled a story to me of when he was working in Ed Fowler's shop and Audra came in for the first time. He assisted her in a jewelry project, which eventually got her interested in knifemaking.
This exceptional sheephorn hunter was hand forged from 52100 carbon steel. The blade was differentially heat treated and hand satin finished. 52100 continues to be among my favorite steels for its edge holding ability. A differential heat treatment assures that the knife will have a soft, durable spine whereas the edge will be extremely hard.
The handle is formed from a single piece of sheephorn. It has been nicely sculpted and has a light translucence. The blade has been distal tapered, resulting in an optimal balance in the hand. Excellent work throughout!
