Description: Tom Sterling is internationally known as a netsuke artist, bringing the attention to detail he learned from the precision work of carving small sculptural objects, or toggles, usually worn to suspend objects hung from the sash of the kimono. Recently, he decided that it would be a fun project to make a series of fetishes, incorporating the animal figures common to netsuke. These fetishes are spectacular.
Native Americans believed fetishes carried spirits and magical powers for hunting or healing and had to be treated with respect. This fetish features stag beetle carved from .999 fine silver. The beetle sits on top of a Native American frog carved from Whidbey Island beach rock and is attached with red silk thread. These are set on a base sculpted from maple burl and black walnut.
