Description: Tom Sterling is internationally known as a netsuke artist, bringing the attention to detail he learned from the precision work of carving small sculptural objects, or toggles, usually worn to suspend objects hung from the sash of the kimono.
This buckskin medicine pouch displays a carved and pyrographed miniature halibut hook done in the Northwest Native American style of a raven. The hook is carved from English boxwood and has double inlaid eyes incorporating fossil ivory and ebony. The eyes show the strongest evidence of Tom's experience as a netsuke carver. The double inlaid eyes create a very lifelike appearance. The barb is also fossil ivory. The leather cord is fastened with an antler toggle. The pouch measures approximately 2 3/4" x 2". The leather cord is approximately 24 inches. Excellent work throughout.
