Description: The langseax is the versatile weapon-come-tool of the Normans and Vikings up until the 12th century. Almost all warriors throughout the dark ages carried it, and it served many as a last line of defense. As a secondary weapon it needed to be rapidly accessible, and was carried slung across the front or back of the torso.
This exceptional rendition by Vince Evans is quite a bit better than the langseax carried by most warriors in the dark ages! The blade was forged by Vince from two separate bars of carbon steel Damascus. The spine bar incorporates 5160 and 1018 carbon steels. He forged 5160 and L6 carbon steels for the edge bar -- thus assuring a keen, long lasting edge. Vince's mark is inlaid in brass in the base of the fuller on the left side of the blade. Fittings on the handle were formed from wrought iron and are inlaid with a silver alloy. When the fittings are blued, the inlaid alloy turns gold toned. Antiqued brass spacers surround a birdseye maple handle. The sheath was first formed from basswood and wrapped in leather. Vince made the fittings from antiqued brass. Excellent work throughout!
