Description: Bill Burke, who was honored as a journeyman smith June 2003, makes knives that are as high performance as a knife can get. This Yearling features both an exceptional handle and blade. The right side of the handle has been sculpted so as to swell at the center and at the butt. The handle is smoother than on many of Bill's knives because he did more sculpting and this reveals the tremendous translucent qualities inherent to sheep horn. The short blade has a deep recurve and quickly sweeps up to the tip, resulting in a dramatic "snub nose".
Each knife is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment and tempering follow the formulas developed by Ed Fowler, Bill's teacher, and has been proven to create some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere.
When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
