Blade: Percussion flaked basalt
Handle: Sculpted fossil walrus jaw bone with boxwood, abalone and ebony
Description: Another in the "Ugly Fish" series of knives, fossil walrus jaw bone has been sculpted into a lifelike squid. The eyes have been double inlaid using abalone. The squid is attached to the boxwood handle using sinew. The carving is tremendously detailed.
The blade was percussion flaked from very fine grained basalt by Dr. Joe Higgins. This stone is exceptionally difficult to knap. The ulu is accompanied by a Mayan bloodwood and elk antler display stand.
The team of Tom Sterling and JP Higgins is a formidable force. Joe Higgins, who has been flint knapping knives for over 10 years, created the blade of this masterpiece with precision. This skill is matched in the detailed handle created by Tom Sterling, who has brought his attention to detail learned as an internationally known netsuke artist to this piece.
