Description: This Katana is the work of Rick Barrett, who has been forging Japanese swords for over 17 years. The blade was forged to shape from 1075 carbon steel and given a clay temper on the blade resulting in a hamon in a personal variation of double lobed gunome in nei deki. This pattern is shows repetitive wave patterns. The resulting blade is soft and supportive at the spine, with a very hard blade edge. The nakago (tang) is finished in kiri yasurimei and signed with Mr. Barrett's mark. The kanji reads "Toshi Hisa Saku" ("Toshi Hisa made this"). Toshi Hisa is Rick's given Japanese smiths name.
The blade has been fully polished by Rick and comes in an alder shirasaya (wooden sheath). The Habaki (blade colar) is copper with filemarked and a full chiseled burr pattern.
The blade measured approximately 14 shaku (27 1/8") with a 1 1/2" long chu kissaki (point). The blade is 5/16" thick at mune machi (back blade notch) tapering to slightly under 1/4" at the termination of the ko shinogi (ridgeline attendant to the kisaaki). It is 1 1/4" wide tapering to 7/8" wide at the yokote (the line separating the ji from the Kissaki). It weighs 2 1/2 lbs in shirasaya.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
