Description: Journeyman smith Jody Muller show tremendous skill and craftsmanship in his work. The 1070 carbon steel blade was forged to shape and given a Japanese traditional clay heat treatment. Layers of clay are built up on the surface so as to differentially heat treat the blade. The spine remains soft, whereas the edge becomes very hard. The result is a resilient blade that holds an incredible edge. A line is created that shows the changing in hardness of the steel called a hamon. The pattern of this line is a repeating undulation called guname. The softer steel has a dramatic grain pattern resembling wootz that is visible on the etched carbon steel blade.
The habaki (blade colar) protects the blade from becoming scratched while in the wooden sheath (saya). Matching the saya, the handle is formed from maple and accented with African blackwood. Accompanied by silk case. Exceptional work throughout.
This knife was featured on page 95 of Knives 2007.
