Description: This is a very rare example of Don Hanson's work. Don is best known for his highly detailed folders, forged from his complex mosaic Damascus patterns. He has brought all his attention to detail making folders and created this exceptional fixed blade.
The blade is forged from four different carbon steels into a ladder pattern. Don lightly etched it so as to use a clay heat treating technique. The result is a blade that is extremely hard at the edge, and softer and resilient at the spine. The hamon, or area where the steel changes hardness has tremendous interest and displays choji.
The mosaic Damascus on the bolsters contain a complex range of pictures -- showing tremendous control over the medium. This mix of pictures in Damascus is a hallmark of Don's work. The complexity of the Damascus pattern is matched by the bark mammoth ivory. Caramel tones are mixed with hints of green and burnt cream. The feel in the hand and fit and finish are each exceptional.
