Description: Neil McKee's Medicine Shield Bowie is a massive, impressive period piece. The blade, which measures a full 14" in length, was forged from 5160 carbon steel. Neil has done a differential heat treatment whereby the spine is soft and supportive, but the edge is hard -- resulting in a strong, long lasting edge. The transition line is a type that Neil calls "Grassfire" -- a winding horizon line shows smoke plumes rising. At the spine, Neil has left the remnants of a hammer finish for an antique appearance. Above and in front of the ricasso, Neil has fileworked the spine. Along the spine, Neil has left hammer marks, continuing the antique "feel". The forged mild steel S-guard has an iridescence caused by heat bluing. The elk antler crown is substantial and fits very comfortably in a large hand. The crown has been scrimmed with a Native American medicine shield by Lori Ristinen. The scrim is very detailed and shows her work off at its best. Excellent work throughout!
