Description: Ed's knives are the hallmark of perfection in performance, and perhaps most sought after is the Pronghorn Bowie, with the long, sweeping clip point and thick spine. This knife was made by Ed back in 2004. It has been in a single private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Fowler could have made it yesterday.
While being made, each of Ed's knives is pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. This blade features a grain pattern on the surface that is indicative of Ed's most successful heat treatment. This pattern results in a particularly durable and long lasting edge.
The blade was forged from 52100 carbon steel. This is a high carbon, high chrome steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. The blade is forged at low temperature and is subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of skilled hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Mastersmiths Ed Fowler and Bill Burke for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, this blade will be easy to sharpen, yet it will hold an exceptional edge.
The sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. The bowie guard is formed from brass and features Ed's 8 branch willow bow.
The knife is accompanied by Fowler's hand stitched pouch style leather sheath. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
