Description: Tai Goo, one of the founders of The Neo-Tribal Metalsmiths, creates knives that have a unique sense of timelessness and a primitive power created through the perfection of the seemingly simple designs. Prior to becoming a bladesmith, Tai Goo studied jewelry making and blacksmithing. His prior work shows through his knives. Reflecting his Neo-Tribal approach, Tai Goo's shop is a very basic set up, creating his work primarily with hand hammers and simple hand tools.
Bush Knife is a spectacular example of Tai Goo's tribal work. He derives in inspiration for this work from the Igorot (or mountain people) which inhabit the interior highlands of northern Luzon in the Philippines. The socketed construction and rattan wrap are derived from their traditional "head axes".
The stout blade features a hammered finish on the blats and rainbow quench lines on the grinds. The quench lines are the result of a differential heat treatment which assures that this knife will be resilient, yet have exceptional edge retention. The spine is distal tapered, resulting in great feel in the hand. Rattan is wrapped around the handle, providing a secure hand hold. The handle is designed in a socket style, so as to allow for easy attachment to a spear post.
The neck sheath (hikot) is sculpted from mahogany and has rattan wrapping the bridge. Braided hemp neck strap. Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
