Description: Coming back from the Blade show with mastersmith test knives is one of my great highlights of the year. In 2004, Jerome Anders joined the ranks as a new ABS Mastersmith. Five knives were made by each applicant that are the height of their work. Many collectors feel that these five knives are among the most collectable work of a maker's career. These knives were judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. This classic Bowie was one of the five knives that Jerome selected as the best of his work for judging by the masters.
As you would expect, the fit and finish of this inspiring Bowie are exceptional. The blade was forged to shape from 5160 carbon steel and has a hand rubbed satin finish. The blade is thick near the ricasso and distal tapers to a keep point. The balance is exceptional. The handle is formed from a single piece of fossil walrus ivory surrounded by satin finished nickel silver fittings. The walrus ivory is predominantly cream toned with dark blue/green sections along the spine.
This is one of those knives that really needs to be held in the hand to be fully appreciated. Beyond exceptional fit and finish, the balance is amazing and the knife immediately becomes an extension of the hand. The gentle downturn of the fossil walrus ivory handle fits right into the palm. An exceptional find!
