Description: Barry rightfully so considers this his favorite work to date. It is one of the most dramatic theme knives that I have ever had the opportunity to hold, and clearly shows inspiration derived from Barry's long-term interest in astronomy.
The theme begins with heat blued Gibeon meteorite scales. The Gibeon meteorite landed in Great Namaqualand, Namibia, Africa, over 4 billion years ago. Its fragments are spread over one of the largest strewn fields in the world, measuring 70 miles wide by 230 miles long and have a distinctive pattern known as the Widmanstatten pattern, which is one of the richest and most distinct patterns found in meteorites.
The heat blued 1084 carbon steel backbar shows off explosion pattern filework, representing the Big Bang. The liners, which have been heat blued to a golden tone and textured, represent the cosmic background radiation. The rest of the knife is what was spawned by the Big Bang. The detailed blade is covered by a Damascus backdrop of stars and constellations. The thumbstud represents our "little star", the Sun.
The presentation side displays the crescent moon, inlaid in platinum. The Little Dipper is inlaid with green gold and has rose bold beads for stars. The Big Dipper is inlaid with 24k yellow gold, with diamond stars set in gold. The bead above the big dipper is rose gold and represents mars. The bead in the quasar is green gold.
On the reverse, Saturn is displayed in 24k gold and platinum rings. The planet has been textured to show the shadows of the rings. Texturing on the rings creates a three dimensional look and feel. Saturn's seven moons are formed from green, yellow, and rose gold. The comet's body is formed from platinum and has 24k gold tails. Three diamonds are distant super novas.
All the screws are different and represent all that we can imagine that is still to be discovered out in space.
As you would expect from Barry, the interior has been mirror polished. It has been fully detailed, both inside and out. A total of 10 diamonds are used throughout. The blade has silky smooth action and is perfectly centered.
This knife was featured on page 103 of the April 2004 issue of Blade Magazine.
