Description: Roger Bergh is well known for creating knives using unique materials that are hard to find, even amongst knifemakers -- a group that searches out hard to find rare materials. The Walrus Mosaic Hunter is no exception.
The handle is created from a fossil walrus tusk that has a brilliant orange/brown hue. This tone is particularly rare in fossil ivories and I have only seen a small handful of pieces with ivory of this tone. The butt and tip of the desert ironwood half horn sheath have been sculpted into a honeycomb. A sculpted crosscut piece of mammoth ivory forms the guard. It shows off beautiful blue/grey tones at the base and cream tones at the spine. The crosscut shows the dramatic grain structure inherent to mammoth ivory.
The sheath is created in the style of Sami half horn sheaths, except made from desert ironwood, rather than reindeer horn. The result is a dramatic reinterpretation of a traditional art form. The exhibition grade ironwood used has tremendous swirling grain structure with intense light and dark tones throughout. The sheath features a tooled leather upper.
A master at the forge, the blade is forged from a three bar composite. A radial pattern mosaic Damascus bar is surrounded by opposing firecracker pattern bars at the edge and spine. These have been forged from 15N20 and 20C carbon steel for an exceptional edge.
Excellent fit and finish throughout on a vary dramatic hunter
