Description: Ed's knives are the hallmark of a perfect hunter. It is extremely rare to find one of his Damascus knives since only a very small number were made. This one was made around 1988 and, according to Ed, is among the best that he ever made. It was featured in the knifemakers showcase in Blade (Feb. 1988), following an article about Ed's bronzed blades in the Dec. 1988 issue. This piece has been in a private collection and is in mint condition. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
This blade is cable Damascus, and was forged from 7 pieces of 11/16" cable. It is one of his 'bronzed wire Damascus' knives. After the blade was forged and ready for heat treat, the blade was covered with brass, and held at the flow temp of the brass, letting some of the zinc burn out. The effect of this process is to allow copper to flow into the adjacent metal, thus alloying the cable, producing a blade that cuts even better. This knife manifests differential hardening lines, producing a very strong blade that will cut extremely well. The sheep horn is absolutely premium deluxe, with particularly dramatic spacers. The back two thirds of the handle is from a real warrior buck that Ed raised. He remembers that the buck lived to an old age and took on all comers.
The sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect.
