Description: San mai means "three layers". It describes the traditional laminated blades used by the Japanese for swords and daggers. Laminated construction is important because it allows different grades of steel to be combined, created a superior blade. Hardened, high carbon steel is surrounded on each side by lower-carbon, tough side panels. This allows the edge of the blade to be hard to maximize edge holding ability, that is supported by the softer sides. Mike used a 1095 carbon steel core and applied hand forged Damascus from L6, 15N20, and 1095 carbon steel as the outside layers. The mesquite wood handle is a rich red-brown and is well finished. The copper guard and tang are both mirror polished.
