Description: This frontier skinning knife is an exceptional example of Raymond Richard's work. It has an elegance and timeless sense to it that wouldn't be out of place by the side of an American pioneer, bravely breaking ground in a new land. It captures the spirit of a time gone by - yet has the excellence one expects from a contemporary knifemaker.
Explorer George Washington Sears, who was born in 1821, lived with Nipmuc Indians and learned skills of wilderness living. He is best known for his writings under the pen name of "Nessmuk", which dated from 1880 - 1890. During this time, he developed the knife pattern which would later bear his name. This pattern is believed by many woodsman to be the perfect knife, even today. The deep belly allows it to be an excellent skinning knife, with the weight brought toward the tip.
The blade is hand forged 5160 carbon steel with an antiqued finish. 5160 is tough, maintains an excellent edge, and is extremely resistant to breakage and chipping, making it a perfect steel for in hard-use knives. The blade is convex ground for strength and durability. Richard's touchmark is engraved into the spine of the knife.
The handle is a downturned section of stag crown. The contoured antler handle provides a comfortable grip that nicely fills your hand. Alternating stacked spacers of leather and brass will help the natural antler adjust to humidity and temperature changes. An antique wrought iron guard and finial complete the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a pouch style leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
