Description: Mastersmith Wally Hayes creates dramatic knives that combine tactical and Japanese elements. This exceptional example of his work has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The blade was forged to shape from Wally's own damascus, combining 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. The pattern is nicely shown by the broad blade.
The handle is wrapped in traditional Japanese style (tsuka ito). Black rayskin is wrapped with black cord wrap. Copper menuki are on both sides for a palm swell, making the handle particularly comfortable. The copper blade guard (habaki) protects the blade from scratching when inserted into the sheath. The tsuba is surrounded by a copper fuchi (sleeve) and sepa (spacers).
The dagger is accompanied by a lacquered wood sheath with a lacquered copper koiguchi.
This is quite an impressive piece, combining tactical and traditional appearance and a nice mixture of form and function.
