Description: This large Bowie was made by South Australian bladesmith Rian Doudle. Rian creates unique, high-quality knives, finding a balance between aesthetic beauty and real-world functionality. In addition to making his own knives, Rian runs knifemaking classes and programs for veterans and first responders.
The dramatic 10-3/4 inch blade combines twist patterns separated by linear bars. The resulting pattern is exceptionally dramatic.
The handle is sculpted from ancient Australian red gum -- timber salvaged from the banks of the Murray River. This salvaged wood is wonderfully unique, but it is also extremely durable when repurposed into a knife handle. This ancient timber began its journey centuries ago when colossal red gums grew along the banks of the Murray River. As the river changed course, they started to topple into the water. Many giant trees became immersed in the cold water. The acidity of the water preserved these trees and over the centuries, the entombed wood slowly absorbed minerals and chemicals from the mud, sand and gravel. The resulting oxidizing and ebonizing process turned the wood from red to black. These processes also served to harden the timber into the firm, durable material we have today. The wood used for the handle is over 2000 years old!
The matching damascus guard is surrounded by fiber spacers on the handle-side and textured steel on the blade side.
The bowie is accompanied by a hand tooled, hand stitched leather custom sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
