Description: Mastersmith Tom Ferry has been making knives since 1995 and has been forging his own damascus since 1997. His metallurgical knowledge has been acquired not only from studying books and reference manuals but also through years of trials in his own shop always striving for that perfect heat treatment. He is also one of the original developers of titanium damascus (also known as Timascus). Over the past decade, Ferry has collaborated with Mastersmith Bob Kramer to create some of the most elegant chef's knives ever made. Unfortunately work from Tom has become increasingly hard to come by. This slipjoint was kept in a private collection since it was made. By all appearances, Tom could have made it yesterday!
The clip point blade is D2 semi-stainless steel with a meticulous hand rubbed satin finish. D2 is known for its ability to hold an exceptional edge while requiring just a little bit of additional care. To protect the blade from oxidation, it is important to dry the blade after use. Tom's touchmark is on the ricasso of the left side of the blade.
Stainless steel handle scales are hand engraved which a basketweave pattern and two skulls on each side. The skulls are Tom's intepretation of Melpomene (the muse of tragedy) and Thalia (the muse of comedy). A running wheat pattern is engraved into the spring. The scales are lightly contoured to provide a comfortable grip. This is a rare find that could easily be the center of any serious knife collection!
Excellent work throughout!
