Description: South African knifemakers André Thorburn and André van Heerden create exceptional folders at an amazingly low price and tremendously high skill level. When they collaborate, they create A2 knives.
The blade is perfectly centered with silky-smooth, drop-shut action -- easily opened with one hand using the ambidextrous flipper toggle. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. Thorburn and van Heerden created this special A7 with ceramic ball bearings. Generally IKBS bearings are made either from tool steel or from stainless steel. Stainless steel can wear away, resulting in uneven action over time. Tool steel bearings can oxidize making the action rough. Ceramic bearings are the best of all worlds. Extremely hard and wear resistant, they are also inert and will not oxidize.
The harpoon tip blade is forged from a san mai combining a carbon steel core with cladding made from alternating layers of copper and nickel. The core is etched to a jet black providing a dramatic contrast to the warm tones of the copper.
The handle combines Copper Dark Matter FatCarbon scales with Cu-Zr mokume forged from zirconium and copper by Chad Nichols. The pivot is superconductor surrounded by a zirconium pivot ring providing an excellent accent to the bolsters. Bronze anodized titnanium liners surround a carbon fiber backbar. The zirconium pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
