Description: Swedish bladesmith Michael Andersson is a force to be reckoned with. Unlike many Nordic knifemakers, Michael believes very strongly in sole authorship, from forging the blade to shape, to creating the damascus, to sewing the sheath. His style is immediately identifiable and is very dramatic. Micke is one of the few Swedish makers to make large, impressive Bowies. This stunning Swedish Bowie is easily one of his masterworks to date!
The 12-1/2 inch long blade was forged to shape from Micke's own san mai damascus. A central core of twist pattern damascus is surrounded by steel cladding and a large layer of nickel. The resulting blade is extremely dramatic and will have you staring at it for hours. Despite its massive blade, this knife has excellent balance. Because this knife is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to oil the blade, handle, and fittings. Japanese influence can be seen in this knife from the san mai construction to the habaki blade collar typically seen on Japanese katana. A habaki both ensures excellent sheath fit as well as acting as a shock absorber for the blade to prevent the shock from traveling into the handle.
The handle combines Micke's damascus with reindeer antler. The traditional Sami patterns on the handle and sheath inlay is not scrimshaw, but hand engraving. The engraving was done by Sami artist Niila Omma. The end cap, spacer, and S-guard are all matching twist damascus. A reindeer antler medallion is inlaid into the damascus end cap.
The sheath is equally as impressive as the knife -- and that really says something! The wood core of the sheath is wrapped in matching twist damascus. An engraved reindeer antler inlay is on the right side of the sheath.
Exceptional work throughout from a master of his craft!
